Today we began Chapter I of Johnny Tremain. We read/listened to Sections 1-3 (pp. 1-16)

Today in class we checked Section 1 work and discussed.
We talked about narrative poems and the rhythm in poetry. We then heard a reading of “Paul Revere’s Ride” and listened for the “galloping” rhythm in the poem.
We discussed the real story of Paul Revere and noted the historical inaccuracies in the poem. Students completed a hand out comparing and contrasting the poem and the true account of the night of April 18, 1775.
We will begin our study of the novel Johnny Tremain in class tomorrow. In preparation for this, students were given the vocabulary words from Chapter I to define. This must be completed for class tomorrow. The vocabulary word are:
1. apprentices
2. flaccid
3. parasitic
4. ethereal
5. apoplectic
6. crucible
7. arrogantly
8. protuberant
Today students completed and turned in the “Road to Revolution” project. This will count as a TEST grade.
We began reading “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” in the Holt Reader. This is in preparation for Chapter 4 “The American Revolution”. Students need to read pp. 210 – 213 and answer the questions in blue. They also need to answer the questions on p. 218. Page 217 was NOT assigned.
Students also began reading Ch 4 Section 1 “The Revolution Begins” on pp. 110 -117. They need ANSWER the following:
p. 111 (1, 2)
p 112 (Define/Identify Key Terms and People)
p 116 (1, 2, 3, 4)
p 117 (Drawing Conclusions)
Some students may have to finish for homework.
We will begin reading the historical fiction book Johnny Tremain in class on Wednesday. I will have a book for each student to use during class; however, these books may not be taken home. Some students may wish to purchase a paperback copy. We will do all work in class, but students will have to study for quizzes and TESTS using their notes.
Students turned in the “Taxation Without Representation” flyers today.
We reviewed “Propaganda Techniques” in class.
Instructions for “The Road to Revolution” project were distributed. Students began working on these in class. They may work on these after the TEST tomorrow, over the weekend, and after the lesson on Monday. They must be turned in at the end of class on Monday, September 28.
Students need to bring the Holt Reader workbook to class on Monday.
On Wednesday, September 30, we will begin reading the novel Johnny Tremain in class. This is a historical fiction book about the events that lead up to the Revolutionary War. I have a class set that will be available during class. We will always read assigned chapters and do questions, vocabulary, etc. during class. The novels may not be checked out and must remain in the classroom. I have told the students that they MAY purchase their own copy if they like, but it is not a requirement.
Today students received the Study Guide for the TEST covering Ch 3 (Sections 4 and 5) that will be given on Friday. The 10 facts students wrote today may be stapled to the back of the TEST for Bonus Points.
“Taxation Without Representation” Flyers are due tomorrow.
In class we reviewed Section 4. Students turned in the “Triangular Trade” chart for a HWK grade.
Students were introduced to Section 5 and need to complete the notes tonight for HWK. (Most of them did not have time to finish during class.)
Students were also given instructions for making a “Taxation Without Representation” flyer. These are due on Thursday.
The Ch 3 (Sections 4 and 5 ) TEST will be given on Friday, September 25. Students will receive Study Guides in class tomorrow.
I took up the Map “Territorial Claims in North America, 1754 and 1763″ that students were given on Friday. If not finished in class on Friday, the map was to be finished for homework. It was collected for a HWK completion grade.
Students received Section 4 notes today. They also received a chart of “The Triangular Trade” to complete using p. 92. We will go over the notes in class tomorrow, but the chart will be taken up and graded for a HWK grade. Correct punctuation, spelling, and capitalization will be graded, as well as correct answers. The students were told this in class. I walked around and looked at their charts as they were working and called attention to these items. I hope they corrected them.
The next TEST will cover Ch 3 (Sections 4 and 5) and will be given on Friday, September 25. The students will receive a Study Guide in class on Wednesday.
Today in class we did a “video” review of the Colonial Days. It was an excellent refresher right before the TEST.
We took the TEST on Ch 3 (Sections 1, 2, 3) in class. Up to 5 Bonus points could be earned by correctly answering questions about the Tennessee People.
Students were assigned the reading of Section 4 (pp. 90 – 97) and the map on p. 96. They were given a printed map and must color and label it with EVERYTHING that is on the map on p. 96. They will have to put the key on the back. This map will be collected on Monday for a homework grade.
Today in class we completed a map on the Thirteen Colonies. This was a review for tomorrow’s TEST, but was collected for a classwork grade.
Students need to use the notes and study guide for Ch 2 (Sections 1, 2, 3) to prepare for tomorrow’s TEST. Be able to IDENTIFY which colonies are New England, Middle, and Southern, and be able to SPELL them correctly!!
The Bonus questions will be taken from the Tennessee people. You can earn up to 5 extra points.
Today students turned in their travel brochures.
Students received the Study Guide for Friday’s TEST on Ch 3 (Sections 1, 2, 3) and we reviewed the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. Students MUST know these, along with correct spelling of each, for the TEST. We will review these again tomorrow.
